Kerala's electric vehicle (EV) policy envisages an ambitious target of introducing one million EVs in the State by 2022. The State has planned a pilot fleet of 3,000 buses, 100 ferries, two lakh two-wheelers, 50,000 three-wheelers and 1,000 goods carriers. The State-run KAL plans to roll out 8,000 e-autos a year. It has also tied up with Swiss e-bus manufacturer HESS to assemble and later manufacture e-buses, for which a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed. The plan is to make 3,000 e-buses for KSRTC. The KSRTC has already invited bids for 1,500 e-buses on wet lease this year.

Electric vehicles off to a good start in 2019

The government of Kerala has finalised an electric vehicle (EV) policy for the state. The Cabinet approval came with some changes in the draft policy. One aim is to procure 6,000 electric buses for the state road transport corporation by 2025.

In the first phase, EV buses will ply in Thiruvananthapuram. Other vehicles powered by electricity are to be progressively phased in. Charging stations will be set up.

An e-mobility promotion fund is to be started, with Rs 12 crore allocation. Around 10,000 electric autos will be given a subsidy from this year.

Pop-up pavement chargers

London-based EV charging company Urban Electric Networks has developed the UEone on-street devices, which retract into the ground when not in use like bollards. Six pop-up chargers, offering fast charging measuring up to seven kilowatts (kW), were installed in Oxford in November 2019 as part of a trial and the company plans to begin commercial production in 2021.

On Board Charger (OBC)

At the heart of any electric (EV) or plug-in hybrid (HEV) vehicle lays the high-voltage (200 to 450 VDC) battery and its associated charging system. The on-board charger (OBC) provides the means to recharge the battery from the AC mains either at home or from outlets found in private or public charging stations. An on-board charger (OBC) is used in an electric vehicle (EV) or hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) to charge the traction battery. The On-Board charger system described in the material below converts the AC input from the grid to a DC input which charges the battery. On-Board Chargers and Charging Stations

Before we step into charging stations it is important to understand what is present inside the EV and to which part the charger will be connected to. Most EVs today come with an On-Board charger (OBC) and the manufacturer also provides a Charger along with the vehicle. These chargers along with the on-board charger can be used by the customer to charge his EV from his house power outlet as soon as he/she gets it home. But these chargers are very basic and do not come with any advanced features and hence would normally take around 8 hours to charge a typical EV.

An AC charging Station as the name implies provides AC power form the grid to the EV which is then converted to DC using the On-board charger to charge the vehicle. These chargers are also called the Level 1 and Level 2 Chargers which is used in residential and commercial places.

Good thing is that Solar Powered EVSEs are slowly getting popular. Due to the size, efficiency and weight of solar panel it is not possible to have EV’s directly run by solar power.
Vehicle to Grid (V2G) system. Wherein the Battery Pack in a EV could act a Power source for household equipments. Today’s EVs come with a huge battery pack upto 100kWh or more making it an easy portable power house.
The good news: by 2025 over 100 new EVs are set to launch on the market. This step in the direction of improved urban air quality adds pressure to develop and implement the charging infrastructure required to accommodate additional EVs on the road. Finally, as battery manufacturers optimize their cost structures and economies of scale, EV battery costs are decreasing. The result: electric vehicles have never been more attractive to purchase.

Type 1 plug

The type 1 plug is a single-phase plug which allows for charging power levels of up to 7.4 kW (230 V, 32 A). The standard is mainly used in car models from the Asian region, and is rare in Europe, which is why there are very few public type 1 charging stations.

Type 2 plug

charging power levels of up to 22 kW are common, while charging power levels of up to 43 kW (400 V, 63 A, AC) can be used at public charging stations. Most public charging stations are equipped with a type 2 socket.

Combination Plugs

The CCS plug is an enhanced version of the type 2 plug, with two additional power contacts for the purposes of quick charging, and supports AC and DC charging power levels (alternating and direct current charging power levels) of up to 170 kW. In practice, the value is usually around 50 kW.
